Technical field of the invention

The present invention relates to a system for turning off and restarting the engine of a vehicle, and more specifically shutting down and restarting of the engine of a bus.

Background of the invention

Preventing of exhaust emissions is important today, and will be even more important in the future. When driving for example town buses, the driver stops at almost every bus stop to pick up and/or drop passengers off. During a route the driver might stop at 50-70 bus stops. The driver stops the bus at the bus stop, opens the doors, passengers exit and enter, the driver closes the doors and can then drive on. Put together, these frequent stops takes a non-negligible time, while the bus is idling, spreading exhausts and consuming fuel.

In the field of commercial vehicles it is known, for environmental as well as safety reasons, to automatically shut down a vehicle’s engine when a door is opened. The vehicles are often used for delivery of some kind; items are loaded or unloaded and the driver exits the vehicle for a short time to deliver something. The driver parks the vehicle with the engine running, and leaves the door open while he performs his task.

For example, document CA 2 246 630 discloses a vehicle control circuit for shutting down the engine and the accessories of a vehicle’s engine if any of the doors of the vehicle is open. The power circuit to the engine and the accessories is interrupted by way of a number of switches and relays if one of the doors is opened. Other known documents disclose systems where the transmission is disconnected and reconnected respectively.

If such systems as the above are used on town buses, the engine is shut off at a bus stop when a door is opened. When the doors finally are closed the driver starts the engine again, manually or automatically.

A difference in closing the doors of a bus and other vehicles is that the doors of a bus are remotely controlled by the driver, by sensors or the like, and also that the doors are pneumatically operated which means that it takes a few seconds for the doors to close.

The total time without the exhaust emission control for one bus during only one route is accordingly harmful to the environment, and the total of all routes during one day for all the buses in a city therefore causes serious amounts of exhaust emissions.
