Disclosed is a method that uses a hand held gauge to evaluate bent contacts in the Land Grid Array (LGA) socket. Benefits include removing visual clutter and providing better focus on the contacts of the socket.

Background

Due to the brightness and visual clutter within the contact field, it is difficult for an operator to establish if a contact is bent and/or out of specifications for manufacturing. In addition, contacts can be damaged while cleaning contaminants from the contact area.

Currently, there is no adequate solution to address these problems. In some cases, automated optical inspection equipment is used to perform visual inspections. Operator visual inspections rely primarily on the ability of the human eye to detect the different light reflection patterns that result when a contact is bent. This method is limited by the skill and acuity of the individual operator. In addition, the equipment is fairly expensive to implement on a production line and can become a productivity limitation. It also requires significant development to generate a vision algorithm that detects bent contacts. There is also a limitation in the mechanical clearances between the camera in the equipment and the Direct Socket Loading lid of the socket.
