Abstract                                                         

While using Tetra DMO protocol a Direct Mode REPeater device may be used to enable two or more DM-MSs, using either the private call or the group call protocol procedures, to extend their coverage range. This DM-REP may be either a type 1 DM-REP capable of supporting only a single call on the Air Interface or a type 2 DM-REP, capable of supporting two calls simultaneously. A type 1 DM-REP may operate on either a single RF carrier (type 1A DM-REP) or a pair of duplex-spaced RF carriers (type 1B DM-REP).

Since a type 2 DM-REP can support two simultaneous calls on the AI its efficiency is double than this of the 1B DM-REP. However, a type 2 DM-REP is required by the standard to be capable of frequency full duplex operation, i.e. it has to be capable of transmitting on one DM-RF carrier and receiving on the other one at the same time. This capability, which of-course is more advanced and much more complicated to implement, is not required from a 1B DM-REP.

The current standard, which defines the working procedures for a 1B DM-REP does not support the Frequency Efficient mode operation. Hence, a single call through this type of DM-REP will make use of two DM RF carriers concurrently. It is needless to say that efficiency of use of the RF carriers is very low for this type of DM-REP.

The idea behind this disclosure is to establish a FE service, which is a service defined by the Tetra standard for MS-MS calls as well as for type 2 DM-REP calls, also for the 1B type DM-REP. This will be achieved by suggesting new Protocol Data Unit fields, a new dedicated PDU and new channel monitoring procedures.  Thus, if implemented, it shall double (and at some cases detailed later even triple) the efficiency of the RF carrier usage resource, which is usually a resource at lack, while using it by the DM-MS for a call via 1B DM-REP.

It has to be clarified here that if the MS does not support FE it will be unable to use the benefits of this disclosure. If the MS wishes to make a regular MS-MS call it can neglect the PS timing info in case the latter indicates that the channel is free and no other activity is detected on the channel during the channel state determination period.
