Whenever a person meets or reads a name that is from a different culture, there's always a moment of confusion where a clarification is needed to specify what the first name, and last names are. Similarly, applications that present this type of information (names) can either be a slight nuisance in case of applications using personalization features, where a user's own name is confirmed in a welcoming message, or lead to the aforementioned confusion. Currently, applications have the order of a person's names (i.e. first name, last name) hard coded such that when ported to different languages this order is unchanged (for example first name last name). However, due to tradition, or cultural inheritance, presentation of a person's name varies.

This disclosure is presenting the idea of varying the name presentation order based on a server's locale or a setting defining the ordering (from a flat file). The advantage of taking the sequence determination out of the application logic, is the portability of the application to a different country/culture. In addition, in portal type of applications the server can have a default setting of presenting the order of names, but could be configurable by the user in his/her profile settings.
