Abstract

A seat assembly is provided having a stowable head restraint assembly that provides additional clearance between the seat assembly and another article in a vehicle when a seat back is collapsed. The head restraint assembly includes a divided head support that is received within the seat back when moved to a stowed position. Preferably, the head support portion is divided into two sections with each section being received in an upper corner of the seat back when moved to a stowed position.

STOWABLE HEAD RESTRAINT

Background

It is generally known to provide a head restraint that extends upward from a seat back of a vehicle seat. It is also generally known to provide seating systems in which a vehicle seat may be collapsed to a stowed or storage position. Providing a collapsible vehicle seat may be advantageous for a variety of reasons such as providing additional cargo space within the vehicle, or improving access to other areas within the vehicle. The collapse of a vehicle seat, and in particular a second or third row vehicle seat, having an upwardly extending head restraint is often difficult due to interference (i.e., insufficient clearance between the vehicle seat and a second article within the vehicle) caused by the extended height of the vehicle seat back due to the head restraint. For example, a heightened head restraint may interfere with the collapse of a seat back by contacting an additional article within the vehicle (e.g., a seat back positioned in front of the rotating seat back, an instrument panel, an overhead component, etc.), thereby preventing a storage position from being obtained.

It is generally known to provide a head restraint that is detachably coupled to a seat back that may be removed to allow the seat back seat to be collapsed to a stowed position. Such systems create a problem for a user of where to store or place the head restraint when the vehicle seat is in the stowed position. Accordingly, it would be advantageous to provide a head restraint for a collapsible vehicle seat that can be moved between a use position and a stowed position without detaching the head restraint from the vehicle seat.

Description

Referring to FIGURE 1, seat assembly 10 is shown according to a preferred embodiment. Seat assembly 10 is a collapsible seat assembly configured to move between a use position (e.g. first position, seating position, upright position, etc.) and a storage position (e.g. second position, stowed position, collapsed position, etc.). The seat assembly 10 is preferably configured for use as a second or third row seat in a vehicle, such as a sport utility vehicle, minivan, full-size van, pick-up truck, hatch-back, station-wagon, etc.

Seat assembly 10 includes a lower seat 12, a seat back 14 pivotally coupled to a lower portion of lower seat 12, and a head restraint assembly 15 coupled to an upper portion of seat back 14. In a use position, seat back 14 extends upward from l...
