Abstract

When a hydrogen vehicle receives fuel, the fueling nozzle from the fill station is mechanically locked to the vehicle due to the high pressures of the fueling system. The vehicle confirmation signal will identify to the fill station that the vehicle is properly shut down and is ready to be connected to receive fuel. The fueling station would then release the fill station dispensing line and allow it to be connected to the vehicle.

When a hydrogen vehicle receives fuel, the fueling nozzle from the fill station is mechanically locked to the vehicle due to the high pressures of the fueling system. The vehicle confirmation signal will identify to the fill station that the vehicle is properly shut down and is ready to be connected to receive fuel. The fueling station would then release the fill station dispensing line and allow it to be connected to the vehicle.

Proposed Method

The following three considerations should be made in the design of a vehicle fueling confirmation circuit:

(1)                      The shift lever should be placed in Park if it is an automatic transmission or the Park Brake should be applied if the vehicle has a manual transmission.

(2)                      The Main Power should be turned off to the vehicle. This shall make it possible do disconnect at least one pole of the on-board electrical energy source (i.e. battery). This can be a manual device positioned within the drivers hand reach. This disconnect device may be the same device for the power-on procedure of the vehicle.

(3)                      The Emergency Power Off (EPO) circuit should retain power. This circuit would provide electrical power to any hydrogen detection/alarm system that may be on the vehicle. This is also the source for active venting of hydrogen on the vehicle. This circuit bypasses the Main Power switch identified in item 2.

When these conditions are satisfied, the vehicle can transmit a message either directly through a wiring path or through a wireless or infrared signal to the fill station. This identifies to the fill station that the vehicle is ready to accept fuel and allow the fueling process to proceed.
