Disclosed is a method for automatic selection of country/region setting to meet worldwide radio regulations. The radio module determines the country/region based on the model number information on the host systems and automatically selects the hardware setting for the country/region when the module is installed.

1. Background In current notebook PC, the number of the model in which a radio module and antennas is installed is increasing rapidly. The product has to comply with the regulation of each country in order to ship the product with the radio function, however there are regulations which conflict in each country. So, in order to ship the product with the radio function, manufacture must supply two or more SKU' s (Stock Keeping Unit) which support each country regulation. In this invention, we propose the method that radio module automatically selects hardware setting for country/region when the module is installed.

2.Summary of Invention In case of modem, user is allowed to change a country setting. (Fig.1) But, in case of radio module, changing a country setting by user is not allowed. So, manufacture must supply two or more SKU's (Stock Keeping Unit) to meet each country regulation.

To solve this issue, we propose the method for automatically selecting the country/region setting based on the model number information. Normally, notebookPC has a unique machine ID (e.g. serial number, machine type model) on EEPROM. In case of ThinkPad* computer, the last character of model name is assigned to the country number for the shipping country. (Table 1)
