Disclosed is a method for tab features to reduce contact damage during land-grid array (LGA) socket alignment and assembly. Benefits include improved functionality and improved performance.

Background

      With an LGA socket, the contact has sharp angles so it can reduce the contact resistance between the contact and the substrate pads. However, sharp angles are easily damaged during assembly and handling. Contact damage is one of the main issues during the socket LGA development.

      Conventionally, an additional plastic cover is added to the socket to reduce contact damage due to handing. A cover does not address the damage that can occur during package assembly because the cover must be removed during assembly (see Figure 1).

General description

      The disclosed method includes tab features to reduce contact damage during LGA socket alignment and assembly.

      The added tab feature is very simple to produce on the socket. When the package is being aligned to the socket, the tab prevents the package from contacting the socket contacts to avoid damage to the socket contacts. When the package is pushed to the socket by the activation mechanism, the tab breaks off allowing the package to engage with the socket.
