Abstract

This publication documents the need for having a private call waiting indication for iDEN systems. It discusses a solution to provide private call waiting indication to a subscriber while he is busy in a Private call (Direct Connect), Selective Dynamic Group Call (SDGC) or a Packet Data session. The interaction and messaging required between the various network elements in the system to implement this solution are illustrated.

ABSTRACT:

This publication documents the need for having a private call waiting indication for iDEN systems. It discusses a solution to provide private call waiting indication to a subscriber while he is busy in a Private call (Direct Connect), Selective Dynamic Group Call (SDGC) or a Packet Data session. The interaction and messaging required between the various network elements in the system to implement this solution are illustrated.

PROBLEM:

Currently when a subscriber is active in a PC, SDGC or a PD session and a new caller wishes to have a PC session with the subscriber the new request is rejected with a status “User Busy”. A call alert activated when the subscriber is busy in a PC, SDGC or a PD session is also rejected with a status “User Not Available”. The subscriber is totally unaware of the fact that somebody had called him when he was busy in another session. If the missed call was urgent or important there is no way the subscriber can get in touch with the new caller.

SOLUTION:

Provide an indication to the subscriber that a "call is waiting" while he is involved in a PC, SDGC or a PD session. This indication can be the urban fleet and member id of the new caller thereby allowing the subscriber to continue/terminate the old call and initiate a new call with the new caller. Presence information is currently unavailable on iDEN systems. Call waiting feature can serve as a tolerable substitute for presence information and would be much easier to implement within the scope of an iDEN system.

OPERATION:

Private Call Waiting Indication for Private Call Type:

When a new private call is initiated and the target of this call is busy in another private call session, this new request will map to an ongoing call instance on the Tgt. DAP indicating that the subscriber is busy in an existing PC. If the Org. and Tgt. DAP’s are different this information is conveyed to the Org. DAP through existing messages. The Org. DAP will reject the new call with a status “User Busy But Notification Attempted”. The Tgt. DAP will store the urban fleet and member id of the new...
