Abstract

One of the most annoying instant message (IM) occurances is when one is closing an IM window just as a message arrives. We disclose improved window-closing behavior. When a new message arrives, near when a window is closing, the system is programmed to perform some action besides closing the window. By implementing an alternative to closing the window, the IM system ensures that a user will not miss an incoming message due to ill-time closing.

Improved IM Window Closing Behavior

One of the most annoying instant message (IM) occurrences is when one is closing an IM window just as a message arrives. Two of the most prevalent IM systems, Lotus Sametime and AOL Instant Messenger, start to address this problem by notifying a user when the other party is typing. The problem is that such messages are an imprecise tool for deciding when to close an IM window, as some people start writing messages they never finish, thus the recipient does not know when the window can safely be closed.

We disclose improved window-closing behavior. When a new message arrives, if the window is closed within N second (where N is configurable by a user, but defaults to 5 seconds), the system is programmed to perform some action besides closing the window. One typical action would be to ask to user "Do you really want to close the window?" Or, the close request can simply be ignored. One skilled in the art will recognize similar alternatives, and other actions can be configured. Similarly, multiple actions can be configured, one action can be configured for 0 to N1 seconds, another for N1 to N2, and so on. Similarly, actions can be optionally configured for messages arriving just after a window closing event occurs.

By executing these actions instead of closing the window, the IM system ensure that a user will not miss an incoming message due to ill-time closing.
