Abstract

Allow a multi entries for proxy settings on Web Browser. Generally the companies have more than one proxies that can be used, but the currently Web Browsers do no allow to specify more than one proxy in their configuration parameters. This article explains a possible approach to introduce a fail-over mechanism for proxies in the browsers implementation.

Allowing of multi entries for proxy settings on Web Browser

The Background

The more common Web Browsers (for example Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) do not allow to specify more than one proxy entry in the manual/custom configuration. See for example the picture below:

In particular, if a company local network uses a proxy to provide the access to the network and it does not have an authomatic mechanism to provide the proxy settings to the Web Browser, the user has to manually specify the details of the proxy (address, port, protocol, etc.), but he can specify a unique proxy. Generally the companies have more than one proxies that can be used (for scalability or availability reasons). In case the specified proxy is down, the user has to manually change it in the Web Browser configuration.

The new idea: a browser fail-over for proxies

The idea is to provide an option to allow the user to specify a list of proxies instead of only one. In this way, in the case the first proxy is down, the Web Browser has to switch to the second one and so on. This is a sort of fail-over mechanism that avoid the user to manually change the options every time.

Moreover the fact to have a list of proxies available could allow to develop an internal Web Browser alghoritm able to misure in real-time the proxies performance and choice the best one.
