Abstract

This invention utilizes weather information available on the internet along with criteria specified by the parent or guardian in order to control access to a computer based on the local weather conditions. For example, on a nice sunny spring day the computer would not allow access, but on a rainy day access would be permitted.

    Parents are concerned by the amount of time their children spend on the computer. Particularly when the time spent on the computer is at the expense of outdoor play. Some parental control software allows for the specification of times of day to restrict access, however this broad brush approach may not be appropriate if the weather is not suitable for children to be playing outdoors. What makes this idea different is the use of local weather information to allow the parent to specify weather related criteria to further enhance and refine the times at which they wish to make the computer available or unavailable for use.

    This is part of an existing parental control software package, included as an enhancement to the software's existing access critera. This software uses web services technology (or some other protocol) to contact and extract the current local weather information from an internet based weather information provider.
