Method for Using Unrecognized Media Type Labels

The 3494 Tape Library Dataserver and other library venders utilize tape cartridge labels containing human readable characters and barcodes to identify the volume's volser and optionally its media type. The volser is a six character alphanumeric volume serial number used to externally identify a tape cartridge. The media type is a one or two characters in length. The media type is used by the library to determine what type of media is contained in the cartridge.

For the 3494 Tape Library the cartridge labels appear in 3 configurations:

1. A 6 character volser without a media type. These are typically the early 3490 tape cartridges.
2. A 6 character volser with a separate, single character media type. These are the 3490 and 3590 media.
3. An 8 character barcode within which the first 6 characters are the volser and the last 2 are the media type. These are the 3592 media.

The media types used by the 3494 and their media types are defined below. These are the only valid media types accepted by the 3494.
