Method to Manage Instant Messaging File Transfer Based on Target Device

When a file transfer is initiated during an Instant Messaging (IM) session to a mobile device, such as a cellphone or PDA the act of file transfer is often not expedient because of limited system resources (for examples limited file space and memory resources).

This disclosure solves the problem of managing file transfer via IM to mobile devices by allowing the user to define file transfer policy to govern file transfer activities, such that transfered files gets re-routed to another device with sufficient resources to accomodate the action, such as a desktop computer, Network Attached Storage, etc.

This approach makes it convienient to manage file transfer via instant messaging based on a user defined file transfer policy. The invention would work as outlined:

The user defines a policy to manager the re-routing of file transfered during an IM session to a mobile device.

This policy would be imposed on IM traffic on the IM server. There are several criteria that could be defined in such a policy, for example: file type, identity of the sender, space on the receiving device, size of the file being transfered, etc.

A sample file transfer policy is given below for illustration purposes only:

When the user's IM server detects IM traffic that includes file transfer requests, the file transfer policy is employeed and the file transfers are re-routed as defined in the policy.
