Abstract

Disclosed is a device which allows an operator panel, or any other component, to be auto-docked to a midplane far into a computer system, or other type of system. This is a cost-effective design for the assembly that also reduces the overall cost of the entire computer system. This design accommodates easy installation, airflow, guidance, and retention.

Disclosed is a device which allows an operator panel, or any other component, to be auto-docked to a midplane far into a computer system, or other type of system. This design does not add any additional cost to the system when a customer does not need an operator panel.

     The cable is part of the operator panel (see Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 below). Cost is incurred only when an operator panel is needed. This reduces the cost of systems that do not use an operator panel as there are no unused cables in the system. Not all systems require an operator panel. This design also ensures that the operator panel and flex cable associated with it are fully plugged (there is adequate retention in the design for the cable, the operator panel card, and the entire assembly). This design is a simple and easy installation. It provides guidance for the connector set on the end of the flex cable, since the guidance is not built into the connectors. There is not hand-plugging needed, nor are there extra cables to get in the way. The assembly can be installed and removed fast and easy. Sheet metal encloses the flex cable for protection. The system provides for retention minimizing reliability issues with the connector. Airflow is allowed to pass through the assembly in order to properly cool components around the operator panel assembly (such as DASD and PCI cards). The core ideas for this invention are:
