Abstract

We disclose a CPP GMR structure to enhance dR/R for the synthetic free layer. Use of Cr coupling layer and Fe layer in 2nd portion of the synthetic free layer allows addition of spin dependent scattering contributions from 1st portion and 2nd portion of the free layers.

The structure is as folllows:

NiFeCr/NiFe/PtMn/CoFe/Ru/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/NiFe/CoFe50/Cr/Fe/Cap/

Cr layer in the free provides antiparallel coupling between CoFe50 and Fe. The desired thickness of Cr is in the range of 9 to 11 A. The 1st portion of the free layer (CoFe/NiFe/CoFe50) is 60 A thick and 2nd portion (Fe) is about 30 A thick. These are thicknesses normalized to NiFe permalloy moment.
