Disclosed is a method to search for specific use of words within data files but not to reveal the person who is making the specific use, thereby insuring individual privacy while at the same time making the specific use available for further analysis. An anonymizer service bureau may be used to facilitate this service.

The method consists of receiving information, creating anonymized information by removing at least one identifying element from the information, and analyzing the anonymized information to identify at least one characteristic, and may include the sending of at least one result of the analyzing to a third party. The information is any one of e-mail, text files, digital data, images, audio information, spoken words, telephone calls, video, clickstream data, on-line transactions, instant messages, voice mail, facsimiles, chat room messages, recorded spoken words, surveillance data, and biometric data.

The identifying element may be the originator of a communication, the recipient of a communication, personal information (i.e. phone number, address, e-mail address), or other identifying characteristics, while the removal of identifying elements may be partial, e.g., demographic or general information about identities may be preserved.

The analyzing may consist of searching for keywords, searching for phrases, searching for image and image characteristics, searching for speech fragments, e.g....
