AN IMPROVED FLAT PANEL X-RAY DETECTOR

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

        This invention relates generally to X-ray detectors, and more particularly, to flat panel X-ray detectors for use in diagnostic medical imaging.

       Flat panel detectors known in the art make use of an Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) plane covering substantially, the entire surface of a flat panel. The ITO plane is configured to have an equipotential surface, and an electrical conductivity lower than that of a solid metallic sheet. 

In a flat panel detector, due to magnetic field interference from an electromagnetic tracking system, the thickness of the ITO plane becomes less than the skin depth of the ITO plane.  This results in eddy current formation along the ITO plane and cause disturbance to the incident magnetic field lines passing through the ITO plane.  Moreover, the voltage induced by the incident magnetic field tends to create unequal potential over the ITO plane.

Generally, one of a single ended or differential sense amplifier is connected between an individual data line and a common reference point configured on the ITO plane.  Due to this configuration, the current path through the ITO plane is likely to be separated from the data line, resulting in a large effective loop area.

Thus, flat panel X-ray detectors known in the art are more susceptible to interfering magnetic fields and also have configuration that leads to a large effective loop area, which is not desirable for improved efficiency in operation of a flat panel X-ray detector.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In an embodiment, an improved flat panel X-ray detector is provided.  The flat panel detector comprises a differential sense amplifier connected between a data line and an individual reference point located substantially close to the amplifier input on ITO plane.

In another embodiment, an improved flat panel X-ray detector comprises, a differential sense amplifier connected between differential data lines which are substantially in close proximity to each other.
