Abstract

A method and system for presenting a DICOM Structured Report comprises the step of exporting a DICOM Structured Report to an audio file format such as, for example, .wav, .au format, and then playing the audio file when the referenced images to the report are being viewed.

A METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR PRESENTING DICOM STRUCTURED REPORTS

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates generally to presenting radiological reports, and more particularly, to methods and systems for presenting DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine) Structured Reports (SR) in diagnostic medical imaging such as, for example, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) etc.,

A DICOM Structured Report (SR) is used widely as a standard mechanism for presenting e.g., for capturing, transmitting and exchanging information in diagnostic medical imaging.

Known methods and systems for presenting a DICOM Structured Report includes, for example, using a DICOM SR viewer available on the Advantage Windows (AW) review workstation, which enables exporting the report to formats such as HTML, XML, plain text and PDF formats that would facilitate generating a hard copy of the reports being presented.

Generally, a DICOM Structured Report may contain references to DICOM images or other reports.  However, known methods provide for presenting these references as links in the report viewing application (viewer), which apparently makes the DICOM Structured Report and the referenced images, being presented with a disjoint relationship.

Thus, known methods and systems for presenting a DICOM Structured Report do not allow a tighter integration between the DICOM Structured Report and the referenced DICOM images, and therefore may provide much less productivity for radiologists analyzing the DICOM Structured Reports and the DICOM images.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

In one embodiment, a method of presenting a DICOM Structured Report is provided.  The method includes exporting a DICOM Structured Report into an audio file format (eg., .wav, .au etc.) and playing the audio file while displaying the images referenced in the report.

In another embodiment, a system for presenting a DICOM Structured Report is provided.  The system comprises a text to speech engine to export a DICOM Structured Report to an audio file format such as, for example,  .wav, .au format, and an appli...
