Abstract

The method includes storing surgical planning data in combination with patient data that can be associated with a patient, in a common file, within a workstation. During use of the common file by surgeon in a surgical navigation system, clinical data is automatically collected and stored in the common file that can be archived by the surgeon.

A METHOD FOR HANDLING CLINICAL DATA

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0001]   This invention relates generally to methods for handling clinical data, and more particularly, to methods for loading, storing, archiving and transmitting pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative clinical data via a network or a removable storage media.

[0002]   Generally, surgeons generate several types of data, before, during and after a procedure.  Such data, generally termed as “user generated data”, include for example, surgical planning data, user actions done with a surgical navigation system.

[0003]   However, these user generated data are specific to the system running a software and also cannot be archived or transmitted to another system over a network.

[0004]   Thus, existing systems do not facilitate archiving of user generated data to a PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) or a removable medium and also transmission of data to another system over a network.

[0005]    FIG. 1 shows a flow diagram of a system for handling clinical data according to one embodiment of the present invention.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0006]    In an embodiment, a method for handling clinical data is provided.  The method includes storing surgical planning data in combination with patient data in a common file within a workstation.  During use of the common file by surgeon in e.g. a surgical navigation system, clinical data is automatically collected and stored in the common file that can be archived by the surgeon.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0007]     Various embodiments of this invention describe a method for handling clinical data, especially loading, storing, archiving and transmitting pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative clinical data via a network or a removable storage media.

[0008]    In general, the method includes storing surgical planning data in combination with patient data in a common file within a workstation.  During use of the common file by surgeon in a surgical navigation system, clinical...
