FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001]   This invention generally relates to a system for centering an X-ray beam, and more particularly to, a system for centering an X-ray beam on an anatomy, especially lower thoracic and lumbar spine, during 3D image formation in diagnostic medical imaging.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002]    In general, while forming a 3D image of an anatomy using an X-ray beam, it is important to center the X-ray beam on the anatomy according to the desired 3D view.  However, the need for centering becomes much important, when performing 3D X-ray sweeps in areas such as, for example, lower thoracic and lumbar spine e.g. ovaries.  Any misalignment in centering of the X-ray beam on the anatomy may result in a need to perform a second sweep that is undesirable.

[0003]   Thus, there exists a need for assisting a surgeon and/or radiography technician, to center an X-ray beam on an anatomy according to the desired 3D view.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0004]    The above-mentioned shortcomings, disadvantages and problems are addressed herein, which will be understood by reading and studying the following description.

[0005]    In an embodiment, a system for centering an X-ray beam on an anatomy is provided.  The system includes a fiducial displayed at the exact center of a 2D X-ray image and/or an X-ray beam during a scout fluoro. The fiducuial represents the center of both the X-ray beam and the 2D image.
