For high availability systems with redundant power supplies, the power supply control logic should have a power source independent of power supply state. For critical elements of the power control system, it is important that these subsystems have power available whenever there is power available to the system.

Power Distribution for Power Control Logic in Redundant Power Environments for High Availability Systems

Disclosed is a power system design that provides a power control circuit and power distribution system such that the critical logic elements are powered from a common power bus, that has power available to it whenever there is input power to the system. The design of the power supplies is such that there is standby DC power available whenever there is input power to the power supply. The DC standby output is fed to the common standby power distribution bus, and that bus provides input power to the power control logic of the power system power supplies. Thus there is a common system power distribution bus that feeds the power control logic internal to the power supplies. See the figure for the layout of the common power buses below.

In this power control system design, control power is available to the internal power system control logic, such that the shared control functions such as power failure warning logic is shared between physical power supply units. The fact that these power control circuits are shared or distributed between the two power supply units greatly simplifies the wiring of the system midplane to provide the required notification signals for power failure.
