Method and system for character -by-character instant messaging for the deaf and general communities

Instant messaging systems (IBM Lotus Sametime*, AOL Instant Messenger**, MSN Messenger***, etc.), as well as text messaging on mobile phones have advanced the technology to allow people to communicate instantly. However, the mechanisms used are message-based (all characters that comprise the message travel and display as a whole). Collaboration systems for the deaf have traditionally used character-based interchange. The deaf community needs a compromise to allow traditional display mechanisms using modern instant messaging tools. The hearing community also has a desire to see better progress than is displayed today. Currently a user may know that the other has *started* typing, however, without a more regular feedback, they are not kept informed as to the actual typing progress, or lack thereof. This invention allows a deaf person to see a traditional interchange displayed, essentially by transmitting and displaying the message character-by-character at the receiving station. The benefits of this solution have broader implications for the hearing community, too, since everyone is "temporarily deaf" while chatting with a colleague over an instant messaging system employing only keyboards and displays.
