Abstract

In some cases it is important to find out whether a particular product in shipment was subjected to a mechanical shock above a specific limit. Here, a simple and inexpensive method of detecting a mechanical shock above a certain level of magnitude is introduced.

Critical components normally have a shock magnitude fragility limit, beyond that limit, the reliability of the components are questionable. In a typical box as shown in the following figure:

When the packaged product is subjected to a shock level, the foam deforms. The amount of foam deformation or deflection can be calculated and depend on the type of the foam. Knowing the foam deformation, a relatively soft, breakable material can be inserted inside the foam. When the package box is subjected to a shock level higher than the limit, the compression of the foam will break the breakable materials such as crayon, or chalk or other material inserted inside the foam. These materials act as a SHOCK FUSE. These shock indicators will be installed in all six faces to capture shock pulse in any of the six direction shock. Unlike the current shock indicator or shock recorder in the market. This simple cost effective shock indicator can be inserted inside the foam and can be made hidden from the mover or the package handler.
