In an embodiment, an anode cooling system for a rotating anode type X-ray tube comprises an anode 10 having a disc 20 and mounted on a bearing cartridge 30. ANODE COOLING SYSTEM FOR ROTARY ANODE-TYPE X-RAY TUBE

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001]   This invention relates generally to anode cooling system for a rotary anode-type X-ray tube, and more particularly, to a cooling system for a rotary anode supported by a liquid cooled bearing within an X-ray tube.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002]   Conventionally, rotary anode in an X-ray tube includes a cooling system, wherein the system comprises a liquid metal circulated in the anode bearings for heat transfer by conduction and convection.  However, heat transfer in the anode by conduction from the track surface to the bulk is too slow in comparison to the rotation speed of the disc.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0003]    In an embodiment, an anode cooling system for a rotating anode type X-ray tube includes an anode having a disc and mounted on a bearing cartridge.  A hollow cavity extends from the disc towards the bearing cartridge.  The cartridge is sealed to contain a liquid metal for cooling the anode.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0005]    Various embodiments of the present invention describe an anode cooling system for a rotary anode type - X-ray tube.  Further embodiments of the present invention provide an anode cooling method for rotary anode type- X-ray tube.

[0006]    FIG. 1 shows an embodiment, wherein an anode assembly includes an anode 10 having a disc 20 and mounted on a bearing cartridge 30.  A hollow cavity 60 extends from the disc 20 towards the bearing cartridge 30.  The cartridge 30 is sealed to contain a liquid metal for cooling the anode 10. 

[0007]   In another embodiment, a plurality of wings (not shown) may be disposed on the disc to improve the convection from top to bottom of the bearing cartridge 30, and to improve the convection from the outer diameter to the inner diameter of the disc 20.

[0008]   In yet another embodiment, the anode 10 may be made by brazing a plurality of hollow segments constructed out of TZM or Tungsten.
