Abstract

In an embodiment, a processing method for an image having multiplicative inhomogeneities includes the actions of (i) preprocessing the image to obtain an intermediate filtered image that contains salient structures, edges, low and mid-frequency content, and a texture image containing non-salient structures, noise, and non-edge related high frequency content, (ii) performing an inhomogeneity correction on the intermediate filtered image; and (iii) blending a fraction of the texture image with the inhomogeneity corrected image to obtain a final image.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001]   This invention relates generally to an image processing method and more particularly, to a processing method for an image having multiplicative inhomogeneties in a medical imaging apparatus.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002]    Generally, in medical image processing, especially in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the problem of noise amplification has been unavoidable while solving a multiplicative image formation model of the form g = hf + n, wherein “g” is an acquired data, “h” is a transformation and “f” is an ideal image that is to be determined in the presence of noise “n”. 

[0003]   Known methods of mitigating noise amplification during image processing includes suppressing noise prior to solving the above-mentioned equation, using methods such as, Weiner filter method, to suppress the amplification of noise or ignore noise amplification.  However, these known methods result in an image output, wherein the areas requiring largest correction have the highest noise amplification. 

[0004]   Thus, there exists a need in the art for an image processing method wherein the method allows correcting graininess in the image without affecting the correction process or amplifying noise.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0005]    In an embodiment, a processing method for an image having multiplicative inhomogeneities includes the actions of (i) preprocessing the image to obtain an intermediate filtered image that contains salient structures, edges, low and mid-frequency content, and a texture image containing non-salient structures, noise, and non-edge related high frequency content,  (ii) performing an inhomogeneity correction on the intermediate filtered image; and (iii) blending a fraction of the texture image with the inhomogeneity corrected image to obtain a final image.
