(R)(-)-N-methyl-3-(2-methylphenoxy)phenyl]-3-phenylpropylamine (S)(+) mandelate (ATM Mandelate) salt is used as intermediate in the preparation of (R)(-)-N-methyl-3-(2- methylphenoxy)phenyl]-3-phenylpropylamine (S)(+) hydrochloride.

ATM Mandelate was prepared according to the process disclosed in the EP patent no. 52492 by Eli Lilly and company.

Different samples of ATM Mandelatewere analyzed by X-Ray powder diffraction. Pattern#1:

Main XRD peaks the pattern 1 are: 5.1, 12.9, 15.3, 16.0, 17.6, 18.8, 20.4, 22.0, 23.9 and
25.3 (±0.2 two-theta).

The X-Ray Powder Diffraction were performed an ARL X-Ray powder diffractometer model X`TRA-030, Peltier detector. A round standard aluminium sample holder with round zero background quartz plate was used. Scanning parameters: Range: 2-40 deg. 2θ, continuous Scan, Rate: 3°/min.
