Abstract

The use of various High Internal Phase (HIP) emulsions in low viscosity skin care formulations and other consumer product applications has been disclosed previously (IPCOM00018803D). This publication discloses additional formulations that utilize a different stabilizer (Arlatone® V-100). These formulations are stable and have a lower raw material cost compared to previously disclosed formulations based in HIP emulsions.

In a previous publication Dow Corning Corporation has introduced a new product range of High Internal Phase (HIP) emulsions. The emulsions contain a variety of different silicone and non-silicone emollients (see Table 1).  These new products are oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions that are designed to facilitate the fast development of skin care and antiperspirant/deodorant formulations that contain these emollients but also are suitable for use in a variety of different wet wipe products including make-up removers, hand & body moisturizers, baby wipes, surface polishes and cleaners, and even some industrial applications.

Several low viscosity formulations were developed by combining the High Internal Phase (HIP) emulsions with several water-soluble thickening agents (i.e Pemulen TR-1, Arlatone V175, structure XL) that were useful for reducing the creaming without making the formulation too thick. The viscosity ranges obtained with those various thickening agents were from 150 to 500 centipoises (as measured by a Brookfield RVT viscometer using spindle #2 @ 100 rpm). This viscosity range is required for producing sprays and also various types of “wet wipe” products.

Since this first series of formulations, several other formulations were developed by combining High Internal Phase (HIP) emulsions with another commercial thickener namely Arlatone V 100 (see Table 2).
