The acrylates terpolymer Luvimer® Pro55 has been designed especially for low aerosol hairstyling formulations like low VOC aerosol sprays as well as pump sprays (non aerosol). A good performance of the spray pattern and all important application properties are achieved at different polymer concentration ranges. However, Luvimer®Pro55 may also be used other cosmetic compositions, e.g.in mousses, setting puddings and hair gels.

Technical Properties and Uses of Luvimer®Pro55
The acrylates terpolymer Luvimer® Pro55 has been designed especially for low aerosol hairstyling formulations like low VOC aerosol sprays as well as pump sprays (non aerosol). A good performance of the spray pattern and all important application properties are achieved at different polymer concentration ranges.
At use levels as low as 2% polymer solids, Luvimer®Pro55 gives soft to medium hold, at higher concentrations (4 - 6% polymer solids) a medium to strong, "crunchy" hold is achieved. At these levels a typical low VOC valve or pump will produce a fine spray pattern. When formulating 55% VOC pump sprays, Luvimer®Pro55 gives a fine spray pattern up to 7 % polymer solids. This characteristic allows for more formulation flexibility and higher setting performance.
In VOC 55 formulations 30 - 45% dimethylether (DME) is usually recommended. Moreover, hair spray formulations in the VOC 55 range with little or no water can be formulated with Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) 152 a. Apart from DME as an aerosol propellant for VOC 55 hair sprays, propane/butane (P/B) or mixtures of P/B with DME can be used for VOC 80 to "VOC 100" hair sprays. In VOC 80 to "VOC 100" formulations Luvimer Pro55 tolerates a maximum of 70% DME or mixtures of DME and propane/butane [20 - 30% DME : 10 - 20% P/B], depending on the type of formulation.
Low VOC hair sprays made with Luvimer® Pro55 have an excellent spray pattern due to its low viscosity (valve and actuator systems from Seaquist or Precision). For high water containing formulations the use of a propellant that is compatible with water, e.g. DME is recommended.
Particle size distribution and kinematic viscosity of Luvimer® Pro55 depend on the solid content in a VOC 55 formulation.
In order to achieve sufficient wash-out properties it is recommended to neutralize Luvimer® Pro55 with AMP, or a suitable substitute, to approximately 100% of its acid value. Mixtures of neutralizers, like AMP and KOH (e.g. at the ratio 1:1), can also be chosen to decrease formulation costs. If the neutralizing agent is added directly to Luvimer® Pro55 a high viscosity solution is obtained that is difficult to handle. Therefore, it is recommended to mix the necessary quantity of neutralizing agent with the solvent (ethanol/water) before slowly adding to Luvimer® Pro55. Subsequently, it is recommended to add the plasticizers and fragrance. Water should be added in the last step. These recommendations can be changed as necessary to suit various manufacturing and formula requirements.
