Abstract

In some process equipment, safety doors are installed to release at a specific maximum process pressure. A calibration tool is described to check and set the door release at the proper pressure. Calibration tool 10 consists of jack screw assembly 11 through the top of which is centrally threaded a jack screw 12. Pressure plate 13 is centrally mounted to one end of jack screw 12. Bearing plate 14 is fixed to pressure plate 13, using threaded rod and nuts 15 on each side of the pressure plate. To calibrate tool 10 and a releasing torque wrench with which tool 10 will be used, the tool is mounted to scale mount 16, using threaded rods and nuts 17. Scale mount 16 supports a scale 18 at a height so that the scale's actuator 19 is at the level of jack screw 12.

Calibration tool 10 consists of jack screw assembly 11 through the top of which is centrally threaded a jack screw 12. Pressure plate 13 is centrally mounted to one end of jack screw 12. Bearing plate 14 is fixed to pressure plate 13, using threaded rod and nuts 15 on each side of the pressure plate. To calibrate tool 10 and a releasing torque wrench with which tool 10 will be used, the tool is mounted to scale mount 16, using threaded rods and nuts 17. Scale mount 16 supports a scale 18 at a height so that the scale's actuator 19 is at the level of jack screw 12. Jack screw 12 is now turned with a releasable torque wrench, so that bearing plate 14 presses against scale actuator 19. The torque wrench is adjusted so that the wrench releases when the scale reads a desired pressure, for example, 150 psi. The tool and torque wrench, now calibrated at 150 psi, are now removed from the scale mount. The tool is mounted to the safety door (not illustrated), using rods and nuts 17. The jamb of the door is set against pressure plate 13. The same torque wrench is now used to turn jack screw 12.
