Abstract

A technique is described whereby a fixture provides the automated assembly of ink ribbon flexbands to ribbon housings in a ribbon assembly manufacturing line. The staging fixture is designed to accept a flexband from a delivery tray by means of a robotic actuator. It is designed to function in one of ten operational stations in an ink ribbon assembly machine. (Image Omitted) The staging fixture consists of main supporting base 1, as shown in Fig. 1, support blocks 2 which provide support to the main fixture, fixture plate 3 for supporting all locating sensing and actuating flexband mechanisms, right hand flexband spreader 4, left hand spreader 5, sensors 6 to verify flexband removal, locator 7 for flat locating clamp 8, as shown in Fig. 3, and air cylinders 9, as shown in Fig. 2, for operating the spreaders.

The staging fixture consists of main supporting base 1, as shown in Fig. 1, support blocks 2 which provide support to the main fixture, fixture plate 3 for supporting all locating sensing and actuating flexband mechanisms, right hand flexband spreader 4, left hand spreader 5, sensors 6 to verify flexband removal, locator 7 for flat locating clamp 8, as shown in Fig. 3, and air cylinders 9, as shown in Fig. 2, for operating the spreaders. Locating pin 10 is positioned on the pin in left hand spreader 5.

In actual operation, the staging fixture accepts a flexband from a delivery tray, delivered by a robot, for loading at flat locating clamp 8. Locating tenon opening 10 is positioned onto right hand spreader 4 and locating tenon opening 11 is positioned onto left hand spreader 5. When the flexband is properly positioned, air cylinders 9 are energized, enabling the right hand and the left hand spreaders 4 and 5 to swing out, spreading the flexband apart.
