Abstract

Disclosed is a method for generating unique diskette volume labels in a manner not requiring system support of date and time features. Unique volume labels on diskettes enable software applications to verify that the current diskette is the proper one for the particular operation being performed. Without this check, data being written to a storage diskette could be written to the wrong one, thereby destroying any previously stored data. Normally, these volume labels are generated by composing the system date and time (at the time the diskette is formatted) into ASCII characters which are then written to the disk. In order to provide systems that do not support date and time features with volume label checking, a 10-digit ASCII number (base 10), created from a 32 bit counter, is used as the volume label.

In order to provide systems that do not support date and time features with volume label checking, a 10-digit ASCII number (base 10), created from a 32 bit counter, is used as the volume label. This counter is incremented on each pass through the software's idle loop to insure randomness of consecutive diskette format operations.
