Abstract

A coating method is described for applying a precision narrow strip, such as an edge grounding strip, on a moving web. The coating method (Fig. 1) consists of constant feed system 10, web edge tracking device 11, feed block mechanism 12 and enclosures 14. Constant feed system 10 is a standard feed system consisting of a pressurized supply vessel 15, accumulator tank 16 and a regulated air supply. Web edge tracking device 11 (Figs. 1 and 2) maintains a very constant relationship between the edge of the web and the coating feed system. Tracking device 11 consists of tie plate 17 to which is mounted tracking seal 18. The tie plate is spring loaded along rod 19 between tracking seal 18 and mounting support 20 which is attached to the coater frame.

Constant feed system 10 is a standard feed system consisting of a pressurized supply vessel 15, accumulator tank 16 and a regulated air supply. Web edge tracking device 11 (Figs. 1 and 2) maintains a very constant relationship between the edge of the web and the coating feed system. Tracking device 11 consists of tie plate 17 to which is mounted tracking seal 18. The tie plate is spring loaded along rod 19 between tracking seal 18 and mounting support 20 which is attached to the coater frame. Rod 19 is spring loaded with pressure screws 21 against web 22 to provide roll run-out control. The bottom tip of tracking seal 18 extends beyond the tangent point of the web and the roll separation point and is canted about one-half degree to the web (see Fig. 2). This orientation of the tracking seal insures that the seal will track properly along the web and will not ride up on the web. Feed block mechanism 12, which applies the coating fluid, is mounted on tie plate 17 at a distance from tracking seal 18. This distance determines the placement of the coated strip on the web.
