Abstract

This article describes a technique for identifying the level of critical logic modules on a computer card. Computer cards typically are built with several high density logic modules. These modules can contain several thousand gates. Therefore, since large portions of logic are contained within these modules, these modules are critical modules. To a product engineer working on a customer problem, it may become necessary to determine the level of critical modules and know what changes are in the critical modules. This may become a greater problem if the engineer is at a remote location and not able to visually inspect the modules. Disclosed herein is a method of determining the level of critical logic modules by electronic means.

In order to identify the levels of the critical logic modules on a card, each critical logic module has a number hardwired internally.

This number is called the critical logic module personality number. When an engineer is performing diagnostics from a remote location, the engineer simply has to read the locations within the critical modules that decode the personality numbers and identify the levels of the critical modules on the card. This requires no manual intervention and is completely transparent to the application, since the command for obtaining these numbers resides in the offboard application, allowing access through the service port of the card.
