Abstract

Disclosed is a joystick handle which is telescopic like a car antenna. This joystick can save space when not in use and it can save space when packed for shipment. The joystick length is tailorable to the individual user's input needs, as described. The joystick can stand alone or be mounted on equipment, such as a keyboard or plotter. The telescoping action can serve as additional coordinate input to the host device. The handhold fits into a recessed concavity when the joystick is telescoped in and not in use. The joystick need not be restricted to computer applications (e.g., it can reside in the cockpit in the plane). To extend the concept further, the joystick telescoping movement may be under electronic control.

Electronic telescoping may be useful in more critical applications where speed and ease of withdrawal and deployment are useful. The extended telescope can be used for fine control; small motion of the end of the handle will map to small motion on screen. The shortened telescope can be used for broad control; small motion at the end of the handle will cause large motion on the screen.
