Abstract

A release and detenting mechanism for a paper feed idler roll on a typewriter or printer is provided that is characterized by a smooth "feel" with a relatively constant load throughout its travel. The printer or typewriter includes a frame member 10 which mounts a paper drive roll 12 on a shaft 14. A paper feed idler roll 16 is mounted on a truck 18 which in turn is keyed to a shaft 20 which shaft is journaled on the frame member 10. A leaf spring 22 is provided of which one end thereof engages the truck 18 and the other end engages the frame member 10 and normally biases the truck 18 in a clockwise direction which in turn normally urges the paper feed idler roll 16 into contact with the paper drive roll 12. A bell crank 24 is also keyed to the shaft 20 and rotatable therewith. The bell crank 24 has a slot 26 formed therein.

12. A bell crank 24 is also keyed to the shaft 20 and rotatable therewith. The bell crank 24 has a slot 26 formed therein. A handle 28 is provided which is pivotally mounted on shaft 30 secured to the frame member 10. The handle 28 has a first pin 31 which is disposed in the slot 26 and a second pin 32 which is disposed in the top portion of a generally "u"-shaped slot 33 formed in the side wall of the frame member 10. The "u"-shaped slot forms a central finger 34, which has at the end thereof a raised projection 36 which defines a detenting mechanism. The mechanism is shown in its closed position in Fig. 1.
