Abstract

A method is described which allows a system to IPL by executing the fewest required Loadable Power On Self Tests, thus minimizing the time required for IPL. Loadable Power On Self Tests determine the presence of feature adapters in the system. On each IPL of the system, all of the Loadable Power On Self Tests, one for each possible feature adapter would be loaded and executed in order to detect which adapters were in the system. This would occur no matter how few adapters were in the system. The new method provides a way for selecting which Micro Channel* Bus adapter to initialize and which Micro Channel Loadable Power On Self Test to run based on information in the LPOST Adapter Setup Table.

On each IPL of the system, all of the Loadable Power On Self Tests, one for each possible feature adapter would be loaded and executed in order to detect which adapters were in the system. The new method provides a way for selecting which Micro Channel* Bus adapter to initialize and which Micro Channel Loadable Power On Self Test to run based on information in the LPOST Adapter Setup Table. The new method consists of creating the Adapter Setup Table in the Non-Volatile Random-Access Memory for the machine during the first IPL sequence of the system. The Adapter Setup Table will contain the unique Micro Channel Bus Adapter IDS and Micro Channel adapter types for the adapters found present during the previous IPL. Each subsequent IPL of the machine will reference the Adapter Setup Table to determine which Micro Channel configuration files and Micro Channel Loadable Power On Self Tests should be executed. Any feature adapter slots known to be empty can be polled to determine if a feature adapter has been added to the system.
