Abstract

This article describes a remote keypad device which is used to enter selections from a given personal computer screen. Automotive technician terminals, which incorporate software enabled "buttons" selected through a touch screen located on the terminal, require the user to physically return to the terminal for interaction. The remote keypad of this disclosure is a device which allows he software enabled "buttons" to be selected from the terminal screen without physically returning to the terminal. The device replaces the keyboard for data entry and electrically operates as a subset of the IBM enhanced personal computer keyboard. The keypad layout is software programmable, and the device is packaged to meet the requirements of garage environments.

The keypad plugs into the keyboard pro of a personal computer replacing the system keyboard for data entry. Electrically, the system perceives the keypad as an IBM enhanced personal computer keyboard and will communicate with the keypad accordingly. A subset of the keyboard disk operating system (DOS) independent scan codes is utilized to send keypad inputs to the system. Any number of inputs up to a the maximum allowable by the keyboard may be used. For usability purposes, a small subset of keys satisfies the concept of a remote keypad.
