Customer Serviceable Hot Roll

A hot roll fuser design is described which allows for easy and safe removal of the hot roll by the customer for subsequent maintenance service by the customer.

Fig. 1 shows the relevant portion of the fuser assembly (1A) and the hot roll assembly (1B). In Fig. 1B, electrical connector housings 10 are disposed symmetrically on the ends of the hot roll 11 and have been enlarged and ribbed on the sides so that the housing may double as a handle. Housing 10 contains rib 12 which discourages the operator from accidentally sliding his fingers off the handle onto heated member 13. On housing 10 is placed end cap 14 with feet
15. Heat shield 16 protects the customer from the heat of hot roll 11.

The relevant portion of the fuser frame (Fig. 1A) contains electrical connectors 17 which mate with housing 10, saddle 18, and pin 19 which properly locate hot roll 11 in the fuser assembly. In the operating position hot roll 11 is located in saddles 18, retaining clips 20 are placed on member 13 and are retained by thumb screws 21.

This design allows for the easy removal of the hot roll by the customer by loosening the thumb screws, rotating the retaining clips, and removing the hot roll by grasping the handles and pulling the hot roll assembly from the fuser assembly. After placing the hot roll assembly on feet 15 maintenance work can be performed.
