Abstract

Disclosed is a device for an emergency disconnect of a high pressure compressed air line. The requirements were to be able to completely disconnect the air supply line going to a pneumatic drive motor for a large turntable, to be able to disconnect under high stress conditions without electrical means to be done at a reasonable cost, and to be reusable. The disclosed device fulfills all of the requirements and has been in daily use.

Emergency Pneumatically Actuated Shop-Air Line Disconnect

Disclosed is a device for an emergency disconnect of a high pressure compressed air line. The requirements were to be able to completely disconnect the air supply line going to a pneumatic drive motor for a large turntable, to be able to disconnect under high stress conditions without electrical means to be done at a reasonable cost, and to be reusable. The disclosed device fulfills all of the requirements and has been in daily use.

Two main parts to this device are a shop-air "quick disconnect" and a small air cylinder. The air cylinder is attached to the release on the quick disconnect so that, when the air cylinder is pressurized, it releases the latch on the quick disconnect and, helped by a spring, the connection blows apart.

The use for this emergency air disconnect is in the unlikely event of a turntable run-away for any of a number of causes; an immediate means for severing the pneumatic motor's energy source is available.
