Self-Aligning Mounting for Portable Unit

For mounting a portable unit in a chassis a molded guidance mat is fixed to the base of the chassis with runners to support the unit. The mat also include a tapered guide for accurate positioning of the chassis.

Fig. 1 shows the portable unit 1 with a front handle 2 to enable mounting in a chassis 3 shown in Fig. 2. The edges 4 of unit 1 are shaped to aid initial insertion. The base of unit 1 includes guidance 'T' slot 5 and a pair of weight- bearing channels 6. A floating connector 7 on chassis 3 mates with a corresponding connector on the unit at 8.

A molded guidance mat 8 is fixed to the base of chassis 3 and has a pair of weight-bearing runners to provide minimal wear. Mat 8 provides side fins for initial placement of unit 1 and a tapered 'T' guide 11 which is located within guide slot 5. The use of guidance mat 8 eliminates most of the tolerance and manufacturing problems common with sheet metal chassis. The arrangement positions unit 1 within 1 mm in all directions and, in conjunction with a catch, prevents movement of unit 1 with respect to chassis 3.
