In order to facilitate repeatable tracking of magnetic tape over the head of a tape drive, the following means of compliant tape guiding is proposed.

In Fig. 1, the use of compliant tape guiding within the confines of a scraper- style cleaner blade is shown. Weighted buttons (10) exert a guiding force on the edge of the tape (20) through the action of gravity. These weighted buttons are made resistant to the wearing action of the magnetic tape by being made out of either a solid alumina ceramic of a small grain size or stainless steel tipped with a pad of this same ceramic. The portion of the ceramic coming in contact with the tape is then highly polished to prevent the generation of tape vibrations.

One or more of these weighted buttons fit between the two scrapers (30) of each cleaner blade (31). The edge load induced by these weighted buttons pushes the tape down against the reference datum (11) or lower guide of each cleaner blade. This reference datum is made out of the same wear-resistant ceramic used in the weighted buttons. There are two of these guide assemblies, one on each side of the head (40), to maximize control of the tape as it passes over the head.

In Fig. 1, the weighted buttons are free to move vertically in their holders (12) so that the loading on the edge of tape is not affected by variations in the width of the tape.
