Cutting wheel 1 is pivoted to lever 2 which is pivotable about bolt 3 supported by the print head carriage. During the movement of the print head, the cylindrical flange 4 of the cutting wheel runs on rail 5, being forced against the latter by spring 6.

Ramp 7, arranged at the right end of rail 5, serves to lock cutting wheel 1 in the position where it is lifted off rail 5. If the print head moves to the left, cutting wheel 1 is retained in its lifted-off position by lever 2 being detained by a permanent magnet 8 which is also fixed to the print head carriage. For releasing lever 2, the print head carriage is moved to its left end position in which permanent magnet 8 is located below the ferromagnetic element 9, producing a secondary magnetic flux. The magnetic flux through lever 2 is reduced, so that the magnetic force is reduced likewise and spring 6 is capable of separating lever 2 from permanent magnet 8.

Ferromagnetic element 9 may be replaced by an electromagnet which is positioned below permanent magnet 8 in the left end position of the carriage. By shortly switching the electromagnet, lever 2 is pivoted downwards by means of the force of spring 6.
