Abstract

A method is described which provides a low-stress, leak-tight seal for applications in which one face of a flat transducer must be exposed to a liquid. If the transducer contains electrodes, positive electrical contact can be made to the electrodes without exposing the contacting elements to the solution.

A method is described which provides a low-stress, leak-tight seal for applications in which one face of a flat transducer must be exposed to a liquid. If the transducer contains electrodes, positive electrical contact can be made to the electrodes without exposing the contacting elements to the solution.

Flat, elastically deformable gaskets are used in place of "O"- rings. The increased surface area of contact between these gaskets and the transducer insures seal integrity. These gaskets oppose each other on both faces of the transducer, minimizing mounting stress. In addition, the gasket on the side of the transducer opposite the liquid serves as a back-up seal in case of the unlikely failure of the primary gasket seal on the liquid side of the transducer.

Positive electrical contacts can be made to electrodes on faces of the transducer without having any of the foreign materials being exposed to the liquid, such as illustrated in the figure, wherein a quartz transducer is clamped between two silicone rubber seals. The lower seal is permanently fastened to a CPVC base. Two thin strips of gold foil are also attached to the base at diametrically opposed positions. The foil at the right is led over the seal and fastened down to the upper surface of the seal.
