Abstract

In a data processing environment, multiple resources are available for use by a plurality of end users, such as an application program, a data stream process, a network server, a printer or a 3270 display terminal. Usually, resources are stored in either a library or a data base for access by an end user. In some prior art systems, the location of resources has been controlled by specific end user groups. For example, a printer application may require access to different fonts or image segments in order to accurately image the contents of data being printed. Typically, the location of resources of this type is known and controlled by the printer application.

In a data processing environment, multiple resources are available for use by a plurality of end users, such as an application program, a data stream process, a network server, a printer or a 3270 display terminal. Usually, resources are stored in either a library or a data base for access by an end user. In some prior art systems, the location of resources has been controlled by specific end user groups. For example, a printer application may require access to different fonts or image segments in order to accurately image the contents of data being printed. Typically, the location of resources of this type is known and controlled by the printer application. If a resource is inadvertently renamed or deleted, the printer application usually halts and causes an error message to be sent to another end user, who must then correct the error condition. In an interchange or distributed systems environment, the location of resources is not always known or under the control of a particular end user as access of resources may be required by a plurality of end users. Also, in-line libraries may be created during processing of resource related data stream functions permitting the mixing of internal and external references within a single data stream.
