Menu-Driven Dump Interface

A program is disclosed that provides a menu-driven interface to select and activate system dump activity.

The menu interface allows a user to select and activate system dump activity for a single or plurality of components within a subsystem. This interface also allows selection of the destination of where the dump information should be directed. While dump activity is in process, a panel is displayed informing the user as to which of the selected components is dumping at any given time.

The menu interface is actually a series of panels. There exists a panel for selecting the components, a panel for activating the dump, a panel for selecting the dump data destination, and a panel that displays the status of the dump activity.

The Selection panel displays all of the components of the subsystem. Only components eligible to dump will be selectable. A non- eligible component may be one that is not executing but is part of the subsystem.

The Activation panel warns the user that minimal system activity is recommended while dumping is in progress and allows the user to cancel the request to dump.

The Dump Destination panel allows for input of a fully qualified file name to which the dump data will be written. If the file name already exists, the user is informed and allowed to specify a different name.

The Dump Status panel gets displayed while dumping is in progress. This panel is continuously updated to reflect which of the component(s) is a...
