Abstract

High density electronics allows for the function of two machines to be fit into a space that previously could contain but a single machine function. Typically, one AC power supply is provided for the entire system, regardless of the number of machine functions included. Some users require a separate AC power input supply for each machine function to eliminate single points of failure. This need is commonly satisfied by bolting two identical machine frames together and cross- cabling the machines. However, cross-cabled machines cannot be upgraded or serviced without significant down time.

Typically, one AC power supply is provided for the entire system, regardless of the number of machine functions included. Some users require a separate AC power input supply for each machine function to eliminate single points of failure. This need is commonly satisfied by bolting two identical machine frames together and cross- cabling the machines. However, cross-cabled machines cannot be upgraded or serviced without significant down time. Other designs trying to use dual AC input are limited by the safety requirements of external testing agencies, including close proximity of multiple emergency power-off switches, non- exposure of certain component voltages, and separation of the circuitry associated with different power sources. The problem thus presented is how to design a system with a dual AC power supply.

The aforementioned problem is solved by a modular AC power control area design having a primary AC power input centered between separate sets of the AC control functions. For a single power supply system, the AC control functions are located in two housings that plug and bolt on to either side of the primary AC power input housing.
