Abstract

Disclosed is a means to determine whether a single bit error is a soft memory error or a hard memory error. During scrubbing, memory data is read into a buffer. If a single bit error is detected, the data is corrected and then written back out to memory. The same data is read again from memory. If the same single bit error is present, the error was a hard memory error. But if there is no longer an error, the memory location had a soft error. The figure below is a flow chart of this process.
