Detection Mechanism of Foreign Body

In an impact printer, a mechanism is provided for effectively detecting a foreign body on a print pass of a printer. A sensor is attached to the print head to detect stray particles during print head movement.

In the figure, the print head is H, the metal sensor is MS, the paper sensor is PS, and the paper feed roller is R.

While the paper is fed to the print position through the roller R, the paper is detected by the paper sensor PS. When the printer starts printing, the metal sensor MS that is attached to the print head H moves with the print head along the print line and can detect a foreign body, if any in its path. Then, the printer stops printing. The technique of detecting the metal is provided by a coil or Hall- effect device that is well known.
