Renewable Customer Replaceable Unit for Photoconductor Belts

Disclosed is a hardware design that allows field replacement of the photoconductor belt used in an electrophotographic printer. Previous to this design, the entire hardware assembly was discarded and a new assembly was installed.

This hardware is made reusable by three novel design features (see figures).

The first feature is the split frame 10, 11 that allows separation of the frame into two halves and access to belt 12 for removal and replacement.

The second feature is the pivoting idler roll retainer arm 13 with belt- tensioning spring-loaded plunger 14. This arm rotates up and away from the idler roll 15. This action allows relocation of the roll from the bottom half of the unit to the top half. This provides a free path for the belt to be slipped over the top half and replaced with a new belt. The spring-loaded plunger bears on the idler shaft 16 when the pivot arm is rotated down. The adjustable spring in the plunger controls the force on the roll and subsequently the tension in the belt.

The third feature is the spring-loaded plunger 17 that holds roll 18 in place. This feature provides an accurate means of retaining the roll while still allowing for quick and easy removal and reinstallation. The rolls snap onto and out of location.

These three features combine to permit reuse of the photoconductor belt hardware so that the entire assembly does not have to be discarded.
